German automaker Mercedes-Benz has been producing its popular SLK series of compact roadsters over three generations. Beginning in 1996 with the R170 until today with the R172, these models typify MB's commitment to luxury and performance. That's not to say that SLK owners don't experience car trouble now and again.
One problem that some SLK owners have reported is an issue with the convertible top. When attempting to engage the top to lower, there have been issues with the top stopping at the midway point in the process. Even though it sounds like the motor is still operating, the lowering has ceased.
While the windows are reported to go down as usual, and the back trunk does raise up, the top needs to be put up manually. Sometimes it just needs a little nudge to help it close the rest of the way. Obviously, this is not normal and is an indication of a problem with the raising and lowering mechanism. The problem is likely that there is one or a series of switches and sensors that are failing to operate. There could be a malfunction with the trunk latch or cover switches. This is an electrical problem that should be investigated by a professional mechanic or service expert.
If you are having trouble getting the top of your SLK convertible to close or open properly, you should take your vehicle in to an independent Mercedes-Benz repair specialist for a complete evaluation and diagnosis for repair. This could be a sign of a more serious electrical problem that could affect other areas of the car.
Search for a local, independent Mercedes-Benz repair shop with Mercedes-Benz mechanics that have dealer-level expertise at a fraction of the expense.
