2nd Generation Mercedes-Benz GL Class Brake Problems

The Mercedes-Benz GL Class Second Generation, produced from 2012 – present, is a full-size luxury SUV also known as the X166. Among its sophisticated features are self-leveling AIRMATIC suspension, Collision Prevention Assist, Active Bonnet, and much more. Despite the German auto’s advancements, the vehicle has developed a few common issues, such as brake problems.

Drivers have complained of a wobbling or vibrating sensation when braking, especially but not always at higher speeds, and some owners feel as though the issue is exasperated by mountain driving. Typically these reports are for X166 autos with between 8k and 25k miles on them. Some GL owners become concerned that their rotors might be warped. The root of the issue is likely one of contamination, and, if only the pads or the rotors are replaced, but not both, reoccurrence is likely.

Some owners attempt to diagnose and repair the problem on their own. Brake issues are, however, a safety concern and should be addressed by an expert. Furthermore, a professional garage with Mercedes-Benz experience will be able to tell you whether or not these repairs could be covered under warranty.

In order to prevent reoccurring brake issues, we recommend consulting an independent German import mechanic. They will be knowledgeable about the GL Class, including its common problems and will know, for example, whether or not both the pads and the rotors should be replaced. Furthermore, these independent specialists will be able to offer affordable yet expert service, having access to Mercedes-specific tools, resources, and more.

Search for a local, independent Mercedes-Benz repair shop with Mercedes-Benz mechanics that have dealer-level expertise at a fraction of the expense.
